Deathening uses both brutal and melodic influences of old-school death and thrash to perform a mix of in-your-face, technical riffs and harmonic chords and solos. The present trend pop does not, luckily, raise its ugly head here. The band hit their fastest here, I believe, but fluently changing the pace throughout the album. It can be viciously angry, but also enchantingly inviting, so it is very well balanced indeed. One could quite easily summarise this album as having a few good riffs hidden sparsely about the landscape of intrusive, badly disfigured Iron Maiden riffs and double bass drumming, I always seem to be really rough on Dark Tranquillity but I can't help it, their claim to fame seems to hinge on the fact that in a time where their closest contemporaries began, they decided to simply homogenise their sound and still successfully appear more 'true' to the metal community.
